Clark’s Gun Shop, Inc. is the story of two brothers, Jim and John, who loved shooting and hunting. They spent their early years at “Hollyfield”, an estate near Richmond, Virginia. In 1945, the family moved to the Warrenton area where the father purchased 2700 acres to raise cattle. The farm named “Clark Ranch” (now known as South Wales,) was the ideal location for two young boys to target shoot and hunt.

 

Jim’s initial love of firearms began when he sent a Winchester 1886 in 45-82 caliber to be re-chambered to 45-70. Kindled by his desire to try gunsmithing and build custom rifles, Jim started a small shop in a building on the ranch. During this same period, John, the younger of the two, pursued his interest in bluegrass music. As Jim’s Gun Shop outgrew its building and John tired of “being on the road”, the two began a working partnership in 1957 called Clark Brothers.

 

In 1960, the brothers relocated to the current store on U.S. Hwy 29, 6 miles south of Warrenton. In 1970, Jim was fatally injured in an accident at the store. John continued the operation with his sister-in-law, Madge for several years. In 1978, John and his nephew, Steve, became business partners. Since then, the store expanded with the opening of The Red Shed, an adjacent building devoted to fishing tackle, live bait, hunting clothes and footwear, Virginia souvenirs, gifts, fireworks, Civil War items and books. In 2002, John passed away after several years of declining health. Currently, Steve mans the store, looking forward to the day when his son, Fisher, comes aboard.
